Abstract: Community policing is a new approach to law enforcement and is designed to reduce and prevent crime by increasing interaction and cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and the people and neighbourhoods that they serve. Recent trends within community policing suggest that the second generation of community policing will be more ‘knowledge based’ ie the focus will change from the traditional operative-/tactical/case – or person-oriented intelligence, toward a problem-oriented and strategic use of information as a basis for management and better use of police resources. The book is in three parts. Part I: An International Perspective of Community Policing reviews community policing in Canada, France, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Australia and Japan. Part 2: Knowledge Based Policing will examine various approaches to knowledge based policing from taking a networking approach, through identifying the communities within community policing to predictive analysis. Part 3: Engaging Communities and Regulating Partnerships will focus on initiatives such as Community Support Officers and how the police role may evolve within communities.

Editor: Tom Williamson (1947-2007) was a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, University of Portsmouth. He was a chartered forensic psychologists and held a doctorate from the University of Kent for his research into investigative interviewing. He was a former police office who retired from the post of Deputy Chief Constable of the Nottinghamshire Police in 2001 and was previously a Commander at Scotland Yard.
